SNA Foundation announces webinar titled “Leading An Online Newsroom: What You Need to Know”

A new free e-learning course to help with the transition to multimedia publishing is now available. Leading An Online Newsroom: What You Need to Know, produced by The Poynter Institute’s News University, is the second in a series sponsored by the Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) Foundation that helps local newspapers provide news and reflect important community dialogue in the digital age.

Traverse City, MI, June 12, 2009: There is an economically sound, vibrant and altogether dogged pursuit of principled reporting and conveyance of news and information alive and well at the local level. At the epicenter of this quest: the local newspaper and the many multimedia platforms associated with it. Be it via print, online, mobile or yet unforeseen vehicles, local media organizations are actively engaging their audiences at all levels – providing insightful and independent reporting about local government and news, developing lifestyle and recreational coverage of local events, linking local businesses and service providers with highly desirable target markets and supplying important connectivity within communities far and wide.

Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) Foundation is helping community newspapers broaden the vigorous connection with their audiences by sponsoring two interactive e-learning modules that focus on related aspects of multimedia publishing.

The latest e-course in the series, Leading an Online Newsroom: What You Need to Know, has just been released and is now available.

The first course, Build & Engage Local Audiences Online, launched last year and has already attracted more than 1,300 participants.

Both courses are free of charge and are underwritten by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Designed primarily for publishers and editors, Leading an Online Newsroom is chock full of practical tips and tools for organizing and managing local newsrooms in the digital age. With in-depth lessons on Web-first publishing, newsroom workflow, training and hiring staff, content partnerships, project planning and more, this e-learning course is a beacon for local media houses who want innovative guidance as they spearhead seminal changes in their delivery channels.

Susan Karol, Executive Director of the SNA Foundation, said “Leading an Online Newsroom is a natural follow-up to our first NewsU e-course, Build & Engage Local Audiences Online. It’s designed especially for publishers and editors of community newspapers facing the challenges and opportunities presented by our industry’s digital transition. They will learn from industry peers who offer examples and guidance on how to adapt the rhythm of their newsrooms to successfully accommodate multimedia publishing.”

This latest NewsU e-course from the SNA Foundation takes about 3 hours to complete from start to finish. However, most participants will likely take advantage of the self-paced aspect that enables them to work at their own rate. Participants can run the course from beginning to end or access the topics in any order, stopping and starting at their convenience. Once registered, participants can come back time and time again. And, if experience with the SNA Foundation’s first e-course is any indication, many community media leaders will use this free e-course as an important training mechanism in their multimedia tool belt.
