News-Leader changes include fewer sections, regional operations

The Springfield News-Leader in December started implementing a number of changes to reduce costs.
The number of color pages inside the newspaper has been reduced. The News-Leader has gone from six sections to four: the front page and main news, Voices, Sports and Life sections.
Gannett Co. Inc., the News-Leader’s owner, is projecting newsprint will cost 20 percent more this year.
The paper has consolidated its credit, circulation customer service and photo imaging into regional centers shared with other Gannett newspapers.
The paper has held the line on subscription prices and even offers discounts to subscribers who eliminate monthly billing costs by using a credit card in the EZ Pay program.
Staff cuts have been made, but the News-Leader has eliminated only one writing position, wrote Don Wyatt, executive editor.
