Arsonist targets office of Festus newspaper

The office of Leader Publications in Festus narrowly escaped an arson attempt in January.
At about 3:15 a.m., someone threw a can of gasoline, apparently with a lit fuse, on the roof of the building, publisher Pat Martin reported.
A passing Festus police officer saw the flames and called it in. The building lost an HVAC unit and had some roof damage, but the office was spared.
The newspaper still had power and telephones, but “limited heat and a really stinky office,” Martin said.
Nobody was hurt and no data was lost, he said.
Police were investigating, and Leader Publications planned to offer a reward.
