News-Press buys Warrensburg daily

The Daily Star-Journal of Warrensburg has been purchased by News-Press & Gazette Co. of St. Joseph, leaders of the two companies announced.
The Star-Journal, with about 4,500 daily circulation, has served Johnson County since 1865. An associated free-distribution publication, the Star Advertiser, is distributed
weekly to nearly 25,000 homes in the area.
Avis G. Tucker and her late husband, William Tucker, bought the newspaper in the 1940s. Avis Tucker took over as owner and publisher of the paper in 1966 after her husband’s death.
News-Press & Gazette is a fourth generation company owned by the families of Henry and David Bradley.NPG President David Bradley said NPG was attracted by the many assets that enhance the Warrensburg area, including the University of Central Missouri and
Whiteman Air Force Base.
Mrs. Tucker said she chose to sell to NPG because the company has a strong reputation for producing quality newspapers and understands the importance of local ownership and community involvement.
Bradley, president of Missouri Press Association until the end of the year, said NPG anticipates no personnel changes other than publisher.
The St. Joseph News-Press has a daily circulation of about 35,000. The company also publishes the Sun papers in Johnson County, Kan.; the Sun Tribune papers in Clay and Platte counties, Mo.; the newspapers in Kearney and Smithville; and newspapers in the Kansas communities of Atchison, Hiawatha, Louisburg, Paola and Osawatomie. In addition, the company owns an agriculture publication, Green Acres, which has a circulation of 45,000 in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.
NPG also owns television stations in seven small- to medium-sized markets in the west, as well as radio stations there.
