Sosnieckis sell Vandalia Leader

The Vandalia Leader has been sold by Helen and Gary Sosniecki to Lakeway Publishers of Missouri Inc., owned by the Jack Fishman family of Morristown, Tenn.
Lakeway owns eight other newspapers in east-central Missouri: The Bowling Green Times, The Louisiana Press-Journal, the Troy Free Press, The Elsberry Democrat, Hermann Advertiser-Courier, the New Haven Leader, The Lincoln County Journal and the Centralia Fireside Guard. They also publish several newspapers in eastern and middle Tennessee and several specialty magazines, and operate other businesses.
Fishman is a former president of the National Newspaper Association (NNA) who currently serves on the national board of The Associated Press.
The sale was announced Oct. 17 by the Sosnieckis, partners in Leader Media LLC, which has owned the 133-year-old Leader since Sept. 1, 2003, and by Lakeway. The sale was expected to close Nov. 1. The last issue of The Leader published by the Sosnieckis was Oct. 31.
Lakeway also owns Press Journal Printing in Louisiana, where The Leader has been printed since 1970.
Ron Schott has been named general manager and editor of The Leader. Walt Gilbert, publisher of Lakeway’s Missouri newspapers, will serve as publisher.
The Sosnieckis previously owned weekly newspapers in Humansville and Seymour. They bought The Leader after serving as editors and publishers of The Lebanon Daily Record.
Gary Sosniecki served as president of the Missouri Press Association in 2004 and continues on the board of the Missouri Press Service.
Helen Sosniecki is completing her second year as the MPA’s representative to the National Newspaper Association.
Gilbert, the new publisher in Vandalia, has more than 38 years of experience in the weekly-
newspaper business.
