Obit – Tom Marshall

Robert Thomas “Tom” Marshall, 88, a former member of the sports staff of The Kansas City Star and Times for 24 years, died June 27, 2008, after suffering a heart attack six days earlier.
A native of Sikeston, Mr. Marshall received the Air Medal and three oak leaf clusters for service with a B-17 bomber squadron during World War II. After military service he finished college at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
He spent the next 36 years working for newspapers. He joined the sports staff of The Star and Times in 1960 as a copy editor and reporter. He later became assistant sports editor in charge of the night sports operations. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Marshall wrote a book about his war experiences, “Lucky Bastard Club,”
titled after a group of plane crash survivors to which he belonged.
Mr. Marshall leaves his wife, Eileen; four daughters, six grandchildren and a sister.
